Why Do Dogs Scratch?

Dogs scratch for the same reason humans do — something is irritating their skin and scratching provides relief.

The veterinary term for itchy skin is pruritus. In early stages, it can make your pup’s skin red or inflamed. In more advanced cases, it can lead to rawness, hair loss and scabbing. At this stage, a secondary infection becomes a concern.

There are several things that cause irritation or inflammation, including:

Allergies

Just like humans, dogs can have allergies. These can be seasonal or environmental and caused by things like dust, mold or pollen.

Allergies can also be food-based. When a dog’s immune system mistakenly identifies a normal, harmless dietary protein as a dangerous invader, allergies take over.

Insect Bites

Dogs are prone to the bites of parasites like fleas and ticks. To prevent these, regularly treat your pet with flea and tick prevention and keep an eye out for signs of infestation, including excessive biting and visible flea dirt.

Microscopic mites can also cause intense itching and hair loss. Also known as mange, this can spread quickly if your pup has a compromised immune system.

Skin Infections

An overgrowth of yeast, fungus or a bacterial infection can cause excessive scratching in dogs. Chronic yeast infections can lead to thick, dark patches of skin.

Dry Skin

Weather changes, low humidity or frequent bathing can strip the natural oils from a dog’s coat. Watch for flaking and rough patches. If dry skin is the cause of persistent scratching, consider using a moisturizing oatmeal shampoo and adding an omega-3 supplement to meals.

Stress or Anxiety

A dog without enough stimulation may develop compulsive scratching or chewing issues. This could be caused by anxiety, boredom or environmental changes.
